Platform Graduate Award 2019 – Focus on Imogen Marooney

6th Nov 2019

Imogen Marooney is a graduate of Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton and has been nominated by Aspex for the Platform Graduate Award 2019.

“As a person I am fuelled by art. It is the life blood that often strives me to keep going, even with the more mundane tasks of life and the Platform exhibition experience has helped keep that fire of enthusiasm burning, especially with the particularly difficult experience from the transition to life without that supportive network of a University.

“Working with Aspex has been wonderful, as they have been inviting me create book binding workshops for the public and participate and explain my artwork in their ‘touch tour’ of the Platform 2019 exhibition. This is a tour for the visually impaired to touch the work being displayed. As an artist who works with both tactile mediums, such as artist books, and participatory performative workshops, this was an invaluable experience.

“Over the upcoming year I will be working and developing myself as a freelance artist in my hometown of Abingdon, just outside of Oxford. But you will also find me in Southampton, as I am currently part of a space artsRipe exhibition series. You will find us doing regular exhibitions and events throughout the year at their gallery The Alfred Arcade.

“As a printmaker I am hoping to find a print studio but also to develop printing methods I can do on my own. This will most likely take some trial and error, but I believe this is part of the fun. I am also experimental writer and poet, a skill I developed in my writing groups ‘Bad Poets’ and ‘Slackspace’. Reading these writings aloud is big part of my practice and recently our group ‘Slackspace’ created a spoken word performance for the John Hansard Gallery in response to their exhibition Sean Lynch: A Murmur, Repeated.

Currently, I am making books and zines using found and discarded paper. In this way I am experimenting in the hope of creating a publication which will use poetry and imagery made by myself and in collaboration with others as well.”
