Recipients of the Third Jerwood/Photoworks Awards Announced

4th Dec 2018

Following a national open call, Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Photoworks have announced the two recipients of the third Jerwood/Photoworks Awards as Silvia Rosi and Theo Simpson.

Presented every two years, the Awards are open to artists using photography who are based in the UK and within ten years of establishing their practice. The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards are a collaboration between Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Photoworks, supported by Arts Council England and Official Print Partner, Spectrum Photographic.

Silvia Rosi’s work explores the concept of the family album and the idea of re-staging archival images through self-portrayal. Her photographs reference the West African studio portrait, relating to her family history and their history of migration.

The central ideas in Theo Simpson’s work are drawn from the evolving environments and elements of the world we live in today. The work is articulated around key historical and political moments, but is not confined to them. It sets these moments in the context of history’s long game: the way that the transformations of a globalising world emerge from seams of rock and mineral deposits, from constellations of innovations, technology, and necessity.
