Launch of the Brighton Centre for Contemporary Arts

The University of Brighton will open the city’s first new contemporary public arts space in 20 years this October with a dynamic inaugural programme bringing together works from a renowned European artist and an experimental UK arts collective.

Based across two galleries and a 270 seat theatre in the University of Brighton’s Grand Parade building, Brighton CCA will place the resources of the University, including its research and archives, at the disposal of artists and make these accessible to its students and the wider public through a combination of commissioned work, public events and practice-based research projects.

The inaugural programme will feature the sculptural work of Franz Erhard Walther in his first UK presentation in over seven years alongside a performance installation by Dog Kennel Hill Project, a London-based collective fusing dance, film, sculpture and performance.

Speaking about the launch, Brighton CCA Artistic Director, Ben Roberts said: “The University’s vision for the Brighton CCA is as a dynamic new centre for contemporary arts, experimentation and creativity with an international significance. We aim to enhance the city’s already substantial creative reputation and to provide a new space for the public to engage with artists and artworks alongside the work of students and staff across the University.

“We will be working with partners across the region, including the Brighton Festival and alongside others in the city such as South East Dance, Photoworks and Fabrica to further strengthen Brighton’s profile and international visibility.”
