Mark Wallinger: The Human Figure in Space
11th Jul 2018
Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger will be exhibiting at Jerwood Gallery an exhibition inspired by the seaside setting of the gallery and the 19th-century photographer, Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering work, The Human Figure in Motion.
Wallinger will be taking over the Foreshore gallery on the ground floor of Jerwood Gallery where he will be installing an immersive experience for visitors to place themselves in the heart of the work.
Edweard Muybridge developed a scheme for instantaneous motion picture capture, photographing his subjects moving in front of a grid of white thread. Mark Wallinger: The Human Figure in Space recreates the grid, with the use of three miles of kite string tightly strung around three walls of the gallery space. The fourth wall is mirrored placing us in the heart of the work, the mirror looking back at you like a wide-eyed camera obscura.
The exhibition expands to the further galleries on the ground floor of the gallery with Wallinger producing some brand new works.
Mark Wallinger: The Human Figure in Space runs from 21 July – 7 October.
