Platform Alumni Artist Focus – Karolina Lebek
7th Mar 2018
Karolina Lebek was selected by MK Gallery for the Platform Graduate Award in 2012.
“Since being shortlisted for the Platform Graduate Award and having my first solo exhibition at the MK Gallery in September 2012, I have continued my education and completed an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2016.
“During my studies, my photographic practice morphed into the production of multi-media installations. My degree show, a combination of sound, video and sculpture, was supported by the Polish Cultural Institute, and initiated the production of environments and installations in my practice. Since graduating in June 2016, I have participated in MK Calling 2017 (MK Gallery), and I’ve been commissioned to produce a new video work for a group exhibition at VITRINE, Basel (as part of Art Basel 2017).
“I have recently introduced voice and performance into my work, through an ongoing collaboration with Scottish artist Susannah Stark. We produced an exhibition at StudioRCA in London (July – September 2017) which included an audio-visual performance at StudioRCA and also at CCA Glasgow (August 2017).
“I have also recently participated in the Fountainhead Residency, Miami (December 2017 – January 2018), where I have been developing new audio material and conducting research for my next video project. Since returning from Miami I have been working on a solo show commission, Watra, at Storefront in Luton. This exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, opened on 21 February and runs till 25 March. For a closing event, I will be performing with Susannah Stark on 24 March, presenting new audio-visual material expanding on the themes of the project.”
