Platform Alumni Artist Focus – Sophie Barber
5th Jun 2018
Sophie Barber won the Platform Graduate Award in 2017 for her degree show work, which was exhibited at the De La Warr Pavilion.
“Since winning the Award I have been hiding away, making new paintings in my studio for my upcoming show at Project 78 Gallery in July. I have been working on new large scale paintings a tad bigger than before, and works on paper for the show. I have just about moved on from my Phil paintings – some of which were displayed at De La Warr Pavilion. I think Phil still lurks around but gets painted out. I have been painting the moon, Birds of Paradise, and hand trowels.
“Winning Platform has definitely helped me to be able to carry on painting. I have been able to buy a big roll of never ending canvas and lots of oil paint.
“From time to time I have visitors to my studio which I enjoy because I like to talk about painting.
“I recently found out that I have been selected for the Sussex Open at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne, which will also take place in July. And I have been bird watching in Tenerife, hunting for the blue chaffinch, which I was pleased to find.”
Sophie Barber’s exhibition Bird paradise dances under moon will open at Project 78 Gallery, St Leonards-on-Sea on 14 of July, 6-8pm, and runs until 11 August.
The Platform Graduate Award 2018 exhibitions will launch in September.
