Platform Alumni Artist Focus – Laura Hepworth

28th Jun 2018

Laura Hepworth participated in the Platform Graduate Award 2015 at Turner Contemporary. She completed her BA in Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury.

“I am a Conceptual Artist based in South East London. My work explores process through themes of creativity and connection. Utilising drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and installation as a means to transform the familiarity of the everyday into what is perceived as the uncanny.

“Taking part in Platform had many benefits. I not only had the chance to exhibit within a very well recognised and professional environment but I was also able to push the boundaries of my previous work. This led me to experiment with the concept of process becoming the medium itself, instead of the reverse, where the medium determines the ideal outcome.

“My current series of works focusses on a research based project on Meteorological events influenced by a previous experience during a residency in Greece in 2017. In this way, the ideas of process brings to light a shift in representation of these events, capturing features such as time and motion within the textures created through untraditional forms of painting and mark making. Examples of this can be seen in works such as Lightning Fold, 2016-18 (drawings, canvas paintings and wall sculpture).

“I am currently hosting weekly talk sessions on Instagram Live on Saturdays at 3pm at @lhepworth2, to promote my upcoming solo exhibition Three Days of Rain at Space at 61 in Peckham. It would be fantastic to see people at the private view on Wednesday 25 July, 3-10:30pm.

“As well as that, I’ll be hosting a day of Creative Connection Workshops at Space at 61 in Peckham during the run of the exhibition, on Saturday 28 July from 9:30am-3pm.”
